Backing Up

If you aren't backing up, you need to read this!

We recently did a study at our office on the frequency of data loss in all situations.  Our study has shown that the issue is NOT manufacturer specific and is very random.  However, those with verified backups of their data were much better off after a system crash than those who only thought they had a backup, or did not have one at all.

In the last two months we have seen all different kinds of system come in to our shop with data issues.  This is often caused by a failed hard drive.  Unfortunately, many of the times there is no backup available and the route we have to take involves contracting with a data retrieval company to get the data back.  This can cost anywhere from $300 to $5,000!  Well, that far exceeds the cost of most backup systems, so we'll give a few examples of things you can do to properly back up.

There are typically two scenarios: the casual user who has some documents and files that are critical but does not have an overabundance, there are a few options.  A thumb drive is a device that you can put on your keychain that holds quite a bit of information.  The casual user can simply copy their important files to this device and make sure to keep it away from the computer.  Other methods are CD and DVD backups, as well as Zip drives.  We have found that all of these work but without some additional setup they are NOT automatic, so it is up to you to get the backups done.

The other scenario involves users or companies that have critical data that needs to be backed up weekly, nightly, or on a continual basis.  For each of these scenarios a different solution is in order, but DVD backups, tape drives, and disk to disk storage have all been implemented with great success.  If you have critical data you need a solution in place that guarantees that data is available in case of a disaster, so plan accordingly.
